What it is
Appreciation is the practice of recognizing the blessings in our life and showing thanks for them. When we are Appreciative, we naturally practice other virtues such as Gratitude, Thoughtfulness, Kindness and Respect.
When we are operating out of a loving space, we should look for and find ways to show our Appreciation. While it's very easy to find Appreciation for "big things" in our lives, it can be challenging to Appreciate the "little things." For example, a hot cup of cocoa on a cold day, a smile from someone when we're a little down, finding a prime parking spot, a nice dinner shared with friends or family are allt things worthy of our appreciation. When these things happen we can say a little prayer of thanks to remember how good life can be. Our Appreciation for things large and small can keep us on a positive path!
To show Appreciation for the awe and beauty of the world around us is especially beneficial. It can bring such Peacefulness and Serenity to our lives. It's necessary for us to slow down to do this. We have to practice Awareness, also.
Make it a practice to Appreciate the joys found from our Mother Earth. Get up early to see the sunrise. Walk on the beach or in the snow, or through the autumn leaves. Take a good look at a nearby mountain or grove of trees. Make a point of watching and listening to the birds. Feel the cool breeze on your face. Feel the warm sun on your body. Notice plants in your neighborhood. Try to spot different bugs and butterflies in nearby parks. All of these activities can bring about a deep Awe and Appreciation for the beautiful world around us. In other words, "Stop and smell the roses."
And when the world around you gives you rainbows, tiny frogs, and beautiful sunsets - whisper Thank You to the wind and remember to honor the earth by taking good care of the environment around you.
